There are times when I’m hiking that I am captivated by a scene and can’t wait to get home to print out the pictures and capture the feeling in pastel. Montaña de Oro has wonderful mountains, abundant flowers, and, of course, the rugged coastline. I have done many paintings from pictures taken while hiking there. I have also done many paintings from hills around San Luis Obispo, such as Cerro San Luis, Bishop, Bowden Ranch as well as further afield: Shell Creek, and the Big Sur coast. I also enjoy hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and have done a number of paintings of fall colors in the Sierra.

I’m drawn to trees, and work to capture the essence of the gnarled or stately oak, the elegant eucalyptus with the weeping leaves, the white bark and autumn colors of the sycamore. I also enjoy painting reflections. I look for contrasts in texture and value and the vivid colors of our hills and waterways. I’ve also been painting more abstract paintings, but utilizing forms found in nature.
